Founder of ‘Word Soul’

Patrick has lived a life of creativity since he was very young. His love for storytelling and performance first took him to a passion for acting, and through hard work he was fortunate to train at The Oxford School of Drama and become an actor. His exploration as a creative evolved into Spoken Word poetry where he went onto share his work around the circuit quickly gaining acclaim and traction as a Spoken Word artist. The themes of his work range from social class issues to mental health issues, and he credits Spoken Word as something that ‘saved his life’. As well as live performance and for the camera; Patrick’s work has found various mediums including theatre, and advert/charity campaigns. He recently wrote and provided a Spoken Word piece for charity the ‘Crisis’ in collaboration with ‘Bulldog’ for a joined campaign to create awareness of homelessness and mental health. His piece ‘Breathe’, a piece about the effects of the COVID pandemic, was longlisted in the Outspoken Prize for Poetry 2022.

About

Patrick’s work as a creative has become the foreground in his classes and workshops with years of experience as an educator and facilitator. He has led Spoken Word and Drama sessions for various schools and companies, engaging a wide demographic, with a particular focus on inspiring young people. He has been fortunate to work as an Artist in Residence for leading Spoken Word organization, Apples and Snakes, as well as other artistic companies such as Chocolate Poetry Club, Eastside, All in Your Head, Half Moon Theatre, Haringey Shed, Spoken and Write2Speak. His work as a creative practitioner has become a focal point of his own project ‘Word Soul’, a platform for Spoken Word poets and other artists to share and develop their work through live events and workshops.

Projects

Word Soul is a platform for Spoken Word, Rap and any form of expression to be shared to a vibrant and welcoming audience. The night is split into open mic and featured artists which brings an exciting blend of acts that are both new and established. Patrick began the event in the basement of a barbershop with the intention of creating a welcoming space for artists and people who simply wish to share their journey through their own free expression. Priding himself on being a mental health soldier Patrick believes that Spoken Word has the power to help us communicate our struggles in a very positive way, a philosophy that he has entwined into Word Soul. Word Soul even collaborated with mental health charity SANE to create an event themed around mental health awareness.

Word Soul has now evolved into a platform for workshops of all walks of life, that culminate in participants being able to share their work in a live event. Patrick is looking to continue bringing monthly Word Soul events and more workshops and by doing so creating a community of people who have more confidence in the power of their voice.

Word Soul currently has residency at CRATE St.James Street, where the event takes place every last Tuesday of the month. For more info and pics check out the instagram page here.

Patrick is also currently working on a book of poetry and an EP of his work. Watch this space…
